Looking for a home
A scribe then approached and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” (Matthew 8:19-20)
A friend showed up at the door last night. She is one of those rare people who try to live off the grid, and who try to live radically attached to Jesus. She’d gotten a ride to Washington state, where she thought she had a place to stay and some work to do, but the people who lived there decided, at the last moment, that she couldn’t stay, so she had to return to the San Francisco Bay area, without a place to stay or work to do. Our household took her in; she plans to stay a day or do as she looks for a place that is more permanent and for work. She might take a job as the full time housekeeper for a 53 year old single man in San Jose, but this feels a bit dodgy; it remains to be seen if it’s legit. She dreams of having a horse, she’s even given it a name, and there’s a 40 acre spread somewhere in Colorado where she’d like to own a Christian retreat center. But for now, she’s combing through Craigslist looking for housing and work.
Foxes has holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head. One thing I know, by observation at least: it’s hard not to know where you’ll lay your head on a given night, and the night after that, and the night after that.
