Short commentary on “A Sip of Scripture” from Third Way Cafe

The Times at Hand

“My times are in your hands;
deliver me from my enemies
and from those who pursue me.”
(Psalm 31:15)

This scripture is used in the Confession of Faith in support of Christian Stewardship, but as I read it, it struck me more as scripture for times of stress. During the rough times in my life, I have gone to the Psalms often to find solace and comfort. The phrase “my times” seems to me to refer more to ‘my present state of affairs’ then the hours on the clock (as the article on Christian Stewardship uses it).

Right now I am looking at scripture from a pragmatic stand point. Deliverance from enemies and those who pursue means assistance and relief from the things that are plaguing me, such as computers that are not conducive to writing, and work schedules that do not allow time for family and writing pursuits. The frustration of live pursues me in my dreams, and I do not get the rest I need. These are the ‘times at hand’.

But I need to remind myself then that I need to place all my problems, concerns and frustrations in God’s hands. I must wait on the Divine and rest in the Lord’s assurance that things will work out. I should be grateful that there is a way for me to write, and that I can find some time such as now to write. And I should be grateful that I do have a place to sleep, and even though I am I yawn and grow sleepy, I do have time to rest and rejuvenate. These gifts are also from God’s hands and I give thanks that I am safe and secure in God’s hands. I urge you to do likewise.
