Contentment

without comments

“All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:44-47)

When I read this verse to prepare to write on it, what came across was ‘contentment’. They did not know need because what one did not have the other could provida, and if no one had then all could commiserate together. They met daily to uphold each other and check in with each other. There was daily fellowship; no one went hungry or was lonely. And they felt success because their numbers grew daily. Who of us would not like to live this way?

So what happened? Why are there not churches like this today? What happened to the ‘contentment’? Perhaps we as humans were not meant to live this way. This verse is identified as being cited in support for the Reign of God in the confession. So perhaps it is only when God reigns on earth that we can live this way again. It is nice to know though, that at one point a group of humanity lived on earth as close as one can or might be able to live in heaven.
