Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is what he has promised us, eternal life. (1 John 2:24-25)
Even now many anti-christs have come, says John, who deny that Jesus is Christ the Messiah. Don’t join the anti-Jesus camp; this is to deny not only Jesus, but the Father, and the anointing of the Holy Spirit you received. Listen to that Spirit; the Spirit, too, is saying to remain.
Stay where you are; continue in the wisdom that has been granted you, that Jesus is Christ the Messiah; hold on to it, and you will stay surrounded and protected by the Son and the Father, and will be brought to eternal life.
In our day, there are many anti-christs, some of whom have come out of the Christian camp, certainly many who have come out of a “christianized” culture to a greater or lesser extent. It’s more likely, though, to be the bright shiny objects of consumerism, the allure of sex-and-violence-drenched entertainment, the thousand thousand distractions of everyday living that draw us out of abiding in the truth we have known since we became Christians. To us, John says: hold on.
