The Lord’s ways are not our ways

Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. (Isaiah 55:6-8)

There are many ways that the Lord’s thoughts and ways are not our thoughts and ways, but I think this passage highlights two:

  1. We tend towards wickedness and unrighteousness; The Lord is holy and righteous. If we are to be near the Lord, we must “return,” that is, repent of what we have done–even, I suppose, of what we are.
  2. The Lord  desires to pardon us, and will do so “abundantly.” We tend to  be chary in our forgiveness, at best meting it out for our own purposes. The Lord seeks to pardon any who desire to return, not for the Lord’s own sake, but ours.

Lord, help us to return to you. Help us to forgive as we have been forgiven.

  1. John Thomas says:

    “Lord, help us to return to you. Help us to forgive as we have been forgiven.” I couldn’t agree with Will Fitzgerald
    more completely.

    This passage of scripture truly is a recipe for revival. In my studied of many of the great revivals where hundreds of thousands of people were converted to God’s ways, I discovered that repentance seems to always precede revival. It is true that revival brings large scale repentance, but it was the willingness of a few people to truly and completely repent, which brought about conditions through which God’s Holy Spirit could move over the land and saturate the hearts of the lost. When a few people chose to devote themselves to praying for revival and to continually invite the Holy Spirit to reveal to them all things in them that were unpleasing to God, and were willing to turn away from those ways and thoughts, then revival began to break out. God responds to the fervent prayers of those who cry out for the movement of the Holy Spirit with hearts and minds that have been cleansed from the power of sin. When a small group of people are in unity about the need for revival and the need for daily sanctification, and subject themselves to the scrutiny of the Spirit of God until their deeds and minds (ways and thoughts) become God’s ways and God’s thoughts, then revival must come. It MUST COME, because God’s words must be fulfilled, “So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.” (Isa 55:11 NASV)

    Thus I pray. (New English Translation)

    “6 Seek the LORD while he may be found;
    call upon him while he is near;”

    Lord, My heart aches for those who do not yet know you. You are near – You are touching us with your Spirit. I seek You for their sake and mine.

    “7 let the wicked forsake his way,
    and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
    let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him,
    and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.”

    Christ Jesus, my deeds and my mind are not perfectly conformed to You. I still am conformed to the world in too many ways. Lord I surrender my stubborn willfulness to you and turn away from the worldly practices that separate me from You. Forgive me and fortify me with Your Holy Spirit that I might become holy as You are holy.

    “8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
    neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. “

    I long to live my life so that Your thoughts are mine and Your ways are mine. Lord, revive me! Lord, revive this crooked and perverse generation!

  2. June says:

    “8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
    neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. “

    HE is basically telling us not to try and understand, he is too big for us to comprehend and we should believe as little children!
