Make every effort

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:3 )

This is interesting. When thinking about Spirit activity that binds us together, religiosity, piety, spirituality, and faithfulness, one usually assumes it is through hard work that is also supported and motivated by the Spirit. But here we are told that keeping the bond of peace is what unifies us in the Spirit. And I have to wonder which is the greater task; keeping up an accountable Christian life or living in peace.

And thinking about this further, I wonder if it could also be said, “ keep the bond of peace through the unity of the Spirit.” Because if one is unified through the Spirit, one should be at peace. I think the two would be interchangeable and mutual.

What does it mean then to make every effort? How much effort is “every”? And as I seek an answer to this, I remember the Shema, and the verse that follows. “Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:5)

Gentle reader, may you make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit and the bond of peace in your life. Selah!
