“Hate evil and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph… But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” (Amos 5:15, 24 from Amos 5:1-24 )
Everyone knows the justice by the oceans-full and righteousness like a river. But what I noticed was the “may be . . . gracious.” The prophet Amos gives his listeners no firm promises. IF you are in right relationship and IF you show justice to others, you MAY receive the shalom you are hoping for! And if you have NOT, the justice and righteousness might flood and overwhelm you because God does not stem the Divine’s plans simply because someone has not gotten the message and changed their life! This is the warning that the prophet Amos and the other prophets have been saying to whoever listens.
May you, gentle reader, love the good and deal justly with all you meet, and may the Lord be gracious to you, allowing justice and righteousness to carry you to pleasant places. Selah!
