“Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins.” (I Peter 4:8 from I Peter 4:1-11)
I wondered at the outset which way the covering of sins went – the potential is quite diverse. But reading a commentary by Barnes oriented me. It is our love of others that glosses over the failings they may have. And vice versa, their love for us covers over our sins. And this makes sense, for it was God’s love for us that covers our sins and resulted in the sacrifice and salvation of Christ. Not quite the theme that one would expect during the season of Advent – more suited to Lent . . . on the surface.
The gift of the baby Jesus was however the precursor of the gift of salvation. And one of the ways the adult Jesus was perfect and divine was the maintenance of constant love. And a constant for others will make sure that our enemies quickly become our friends.
May you gentle reader rely on God and our Lord Christ, who is the source of pure love, to keep love constantly & consistently flowing through you. Selah! And shalom for your day.
