This is what the LORD says: “As for the prophets who lead my people astray, if one feeds them, they proclaim ‘peace’; if he does not, they prepare to wage war against him. Therefore night will come over you, without visions, and darkness, without divination. The sun will set for the prophets, and the day will go dark for them. The seers will be ashamed and the diviners disgraced. They will all cover their faces because there is no answer from God.”
(Reference: Micah 3:5-7 )

Menno Simons wrote on the themes in this passage from Micah. He said, “It must be observed that all the prophets, apostles, and faithful servants of God sought and desired nothing but that they might proclaim the name of their God and might point their neighbours to the way of peace. Money, property, honor, and an easy life they have not sought, but they executed their assigned office (a thing alas not weighed by these heedless people) with many sore trials, miseries, anxieties, sorrows, beatings, poverty, bonds, martyrdom, and death, as the Scripture and history in many examples teach. But how the preachers of the world have hitherto refused the service, and even now refuse it, and what they seek in so doing, experience and the Holy Spirit plainly teach us, saying, that they promise death to the pious and life to the wicked for a handful of barley or a piece of bread; that they seek the fat and the wool, milk and the flesh; that they pasture themselves, but not the Lord’s sheep; that they preach peace whenever their bellies are filled (that is, whenever they are well paid) and mobilize for war whenever men do not thrust food into their mouths!”

Pay me, and I will tell you what you want to hear!” “Let me look in my crystal ball while you get out your wallet!” “Don’t miss this chance to invest in the portfolio of a lifetime!” “Elect me and I will take your concerns to Washington!”

Beloved, the best advice and guidance for your life does not come with a price tag. Money can’t buy happiness, despite what you might read on a bumper sticker or on Facebook. And don’t be fooled into thinking that everyone who calls on God is actually following and advising on the Divine’s agenda. These are times to be as naïve as doves but as wise as serpents. May the Lord quicken your senses and inform your good sense and cautions. Selah!
