“But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them–bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.” (Reference: 2 Peter 2:1-3 )
This is the last day for the theme of “False Prophets and the Antichrist”. And no mention of the Antichrist. Years back, when the “Left Behind” series was in vogue there was much discussion about the Antichrist and the signs of those times coming. We do not hear much about it anymore, not even accusations of such-and-such person being the Antichrist. The historic Anabaptists were much more concerned about false prophets, those in the state churches and those who hid amongst the historic Anabaptist faithful. Peter Riedeman warned church leaders to be careful and aware of those sowing falseness in the church. He said, “[D]o not let yourselves be swayed from this service by our opponents and those falsely called brothers, who wormed their way in to spy upon the liberty we have in Christ and to steal it from you. Take heed not to yield to them or obey them; then the truth of God will endure through you.” He goes on to say they will destroy the church from the inside and “you lose your eagerness to serve and grow indifferent, then Satan, having won you over on this point, will soon attack you harder in another and will not give up until he has done the same to you as to others. Anyone who neglects or violates the Lord’s command in one particular will soon be unfaithful altogether.”
Interestingly, according to the writers of the “Left Behind” series this is exactly how the Antichrist of that series tried to undermine the church that was left behind after Christ’s rapture of the faithful – according to the writers. The question is not so much is the Antichrist among us now, as it is what harm can and do false prophets do now? That there are false prophets amongst us I have no doubts. But what concerns me the most, beloved, is whether we know they are false. And do they know they are false. There is nothing more dangerous than a prophet who is false and does not know that what he/she is saying is false. We have so many people who give so many differing opinions that are followed “religiously”. I have said before that the social media, politics, and religion have become so entwined. One is hard pressed to know where a social/political opinion ends and a religious one starts – and vice versa!
Tread carefully, beloved. Seek God’s wisdom and advice. Listen carefully to those around you and measure their speech against the word of God. May our Lord God watch over you and keep you from all falseness! Selah!
