OFFENCE . . . NOW is the time to NOT give it

As God’s fellow workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.”I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation. We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses.” (Reference: 2 Corinthians 6:1-4 )

The writer of Corinthians, both 1st and 2nd , exhorted and encouraged his listeners to live with care and wisdom. He would often use himself as an example of living carefully, bringing to their minds what he and his fellow traveling ministers tried to do. And while the writer of Corinthians might have said somethings I disagree with, I cannot fault his conduct amongst new converts. Historic Anabaptist Hans Symons also had words of instruction and guidance. He wrote in part, “My dear brethren and sisters in the Lord, and coworkers and followers of the Gospel, whom God has shown great mercy in this world, in that He, out of grace, revealed His will. Hence, dear brethren and sisters in the Lord, I beseech you from the depth of my heart, that you receive not the grace of God in vain, for He says: “I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succored thee.” Therefore, dear brethren, let us not give offense to any one, that our ministry be not blamed; but let us approve ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in necessities and distresses. 2 Cor. 6:1-4. Hence, dear brethren, accept this as a sincere request from me, that you take heed to your calling . . “

There are Christians who do seem to unintentionally (or worse yet intentionally) make life more difficult for others – Christians and non-Christians alike. Do not be like one of those beloved. You know how you would like others to live as exemplars of our Lord Jesus Christ, Make sure your words and actions conform to the guidance and instruction God and Jesus have set down. Selah!
