WEEDS . . . Root them out, and have planted within you God’s word

My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.” (Reference: James 1:19-21 )

I am assuming that because the writer of James uses the metaphor of “planting” the word of God that the historic Anabaptists (namely Dirk Philips) extended the metaphor in their application of this passage. Philips wrote, “Because the Word of God is now the seed that is planted by God in the hearts of human beings and desires and must have good soil, therefore it is necessary that the field of the heart be properly cultivated through the grace of the Lord [that] all weeds be plucked up or uprooted, so then the field will be made receptive of the divine seed and bring forth fruit, as James says, “Put away all uncleanness and all wickedness and receive with meekness the Word which has been planted in you, which is able to save your souls,” James 1 :21.”

But I find it interesting that both the writer of James and Philips phrase this such that God does the planting of God’s word. This would suggest to me that it is not just reading or listening to God’s word. But accepting it has the direction and meaning of your life. Anyone can read or listen to scripture but not let affect them or change them. As the writer of James said, it is clearing out what is bad and wrong in your life, and then allowing God to plant within you a new of living.

I could go on and say much more, but I did not intend this to be a sermon. If however my short comments affect a change in you, then I am glad. I know it was not my words but our Lord speaking to your heart and spirit. May you beloved allow your heart and spirit to be futile ground for God to plant within you God’s words. Selah!
