Baptism of the Lord: The Psalm Passage

Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendour.

The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over mighty waters.” (Psalm 29: 1-3)

Now we are brought before the Lord and God of creation. In Genesis we were told the Spirit of the Lord swept across the waters of pre-creation. The psalmist praises and celebrates this God. The psalmist continues:

“The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare; and in his temple all say, ‘Glory!’ “ (Psalm 29:4-9)

This is also the voice of the Lord that spoke at Jesus’ baptism and the Spirit of God that brings spiritual baptism. Furthermore,

The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king for ever.
May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!” (Psalm 29: 10-11)

This is the Lord, beloved reader, who sent Jesus to a needy world. This is the Lord that blessed Jesus as he started to speak to the people face to face, and continues to speak to the hearts and souls of humanity. This is the Lord who gives us the Holy Spirit. This is the Lord I encourage all who have gone astray to return to, recommitting and renewing ourselves. Selah!
