“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (I John 5:1-5)
Clear speaking, holding nothing back writer of I John. For the writer of I John, faith and belief is uncomplicated and straight-forward. God is the parent, and Jesus Christ is the child. But, beloved reader, according to this writer, the Child and the Parent are one! This puts a slightly different slant on some theology – however, that is a discussion for another time. What we have here tells us that if we love the children of God, we will love God and obey the commandments. And, if we obey the commandments and love God’s children, we will obviously love the children of God. And the third part of this is, if we love the children of God and obey the commandments, we will be showing love for God. All, beloved reader, are interconnected.
Where then does Christ fit in?
“This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.” (Verse 6)
So if Jesus, who came by water and blood (baptism & death) is the son of God, who is the Spirit, that is truth, in relationship to God? Just like love of the children of God, love of God, and obeying the commandments is a three-ponged action, so is the Spirit the third aspect of God.
