Seeker: “O LORD, remember in David’s favor all the hardships he endured; how he swore to the LORD and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob, “I will not enter my house or get into my bed; I will not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids, until I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.”
Preacher: Mighty words, from a mighty king. We might be tempted to utter the same words; but if we do so, remember two things. First, David was told that the Divine did not require that from. Second, that the place the Divine desires most is to be deep within our heart, spirit, and soul.
Seeker: “We heard of it in Ephrathah; we found it in the fields of Jaar. “Let us go to his dwelling place; let us worship at his footstool.”
Preacher: “Rise up, O LORD, and go to your resting place, you and the ark of your might.”
Seeker: “Let your priests be clothed with righteousness, and let your faithful shout for joy. For your servant David’s sake do not turn away the face of your anointed one.” Preacher, if we do have and keep the Divine deep within our being, and allow the Divine to direct us, then we as the Lord God’s priest we will be clothed in righteousness and we will have reason to shout for joy. And the Divine will not turn away from us.
Preacher: “The LORD swore to David a sure oath from which he will not turn back: “One of the sons of your body I will set on your throne. If your sons keep my covenant and my decrees that I shall teach them, their sons also, forevermore, shall sit on your throne.” (Psalm 132:1-12) But there is the rub, Seeker, the descendants of David did not keep the covenant & decrees. It is right and fitting that we think of these things the week that celebrates the Reign of Christ. The first place, the primary place, that Jesus Christ rules should be within us. All things then spread out from there.
Seeker: Another psalm also celebrates the reign of the Divine, and is paired with the other Old Testament passage that was considered this week. “The LORD is king, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed, he is girded with strength. He has established the world; it shall never be moved; your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting. The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring. More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters, more majestic than the waves of the sea, majestic on high is the LORD! Your decrees are very sure; holiness befits your house, O LORD, forevermore.” (Psalm 93)
Preacher: That is very true, Seeker, and I commend you for looking at all the Old Testament & Psalm passages that this week holds. It is a miracle, and a bit beyond our understanding that the Mighty Lord who is in Psalm 132 & 93, desires to be within the comparatively weak body of humanity. But this incongruity should not dissuade us but encourage to embrace the seemingly impossible.
Seeker: What seems impossible for humanity is possible for the Divine. And we should make great haste in aligning ourselves and our lives to the Divine’s direction and guidance! Shalom & Selah!
