Season of Advent, Year B, 2023 – Epistle Passage, Fourth Sunday: Toasting the Divine

Now to God who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but is now disclosed, and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the Gentiles, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith — to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever! Amen.” (Romans 16:25-27 )

At the end of the book of Romans, Paul draws attention to the Source of the message of salvation and correct living that he has recommended, encouraged, and exhorted to the believers in Rome. I have great appreciation for the way Paul begins and ends his letters – commending and lifting up the reader(s). But it has long baffled how to name or define his “Now to”s. And as I pondered this once again, a new idea came into my mind. Previously, since it was at the end of his written “sermon” or preaching it seemed best to call it a “benediction”, because it does resemble one. A final blessing before parting. It is the phrase “now to” that has made me wonder what more can be made of this. Then it came to me – it is a toast to the “Divine”. It does not really exhort or instruct. It does not provide guidance for how to life etc – but it does “guide” the reader’s attention to the Power and Might that has caused Paul to write in the first place. I do not think much more needs to be said.

May you, beloved reader, lift your thoughts and spirit to the One who brings us joy and hope this season! Shalom & Selah!
