First Sunday After Christmas Day, Year B 2023: – Epistle Passage: Post-Christmas Blessings & Peace

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children.” (Galatians 4:4 – 5)

One of the questions that has circled and cycled around my brain as a follow of the Divine and the Divine’s Gift of Jesus the Christ is – why then? I considered that it was a time when the suffering of the Jews had reached its apex. No longer was Jerusalem for the Jews but was the conquered city and possession of the Roman Empire. But . . . they had been made captive before, conquered & carried off, rescued & returned, and conquered again. If it was just for the sake of the Jews, Jesus might have come earlier. But we know it was not just for the Jews because the disciples plus Paul were called to carry out the message to Gentiles and others. But if transmitting the message was the only point, why not wait until later when messaging and transportation would have been easier.

Maybe it was because Israel, Judah, & Jerusalem were getting more people coming & going. With Roman overseeing them and other cities and nations, the news of Jesus would have been on a larger stage – so to speak. With limited resources of spreading the word, a preview on the Roman front would have propelled the news, if not the accurate facts. Was this background the soonest moment to ensure wide spread delivery of the new of Jesus?

Paul phrases it as “the fullness of time”. But looking back, what made that the correct “fullness”? Was it because the descendants of Abraham were finally ready? Yet again, it was not just for the Jews that Jesus came. I have been thinking about this a lot over the years. And this year again I have been thinking. And the conclusion I have come to is that humanity was now ready. Not the Jews or any other nation, but the wondering and searching mind(s) of humanity. Humanity was at the point where they were starting to left their heads from simple existence to who they were in creation and what their purpose was. I do not know if that is correct. What I do know is that answer is answered the question for me, and calmed my soul and spirit.

“And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.” (Verses 6 – 7)

May the Spirit of Christmas linger in your home, answering questions that perplex your soul, and bring you peace, rest, assurances, and Shalom! Selah!
