Sundays After Pentecost, Year B 2023 – 24: Psalm Passage – All the ways the Divine endures us; Preacher & Seeker speak to it

Preacher: “O LORD, you have searched me and known me.”

Seeker: “You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away.”

Preacher: And yet, Seeker, the Divine still loves us! I mean, knowing all that we are, all we have done, and all we will do – our flaws and sins, our mistakes and failings, all the ways we will NOT live the type of faith life that is expected. We are still loved! And that deserves to acknowledge with praise and thanksgiving.

Seeker: “You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.

Preacher: “Even before a word is on my tongue, O LORD, you know it completely.”

Seeker: And yet we are called to testify to and for the Lord God. We are called to be examples of ambassadors of the Lord God. The Divine knows we are not perfect; but the Divine also knows we are committed to living faith-filled spiritual lives. The Divine knows our intentions, and honors that. And the gives us the guidance and teaching we need to live out those intentions as best we can.

Preacher: “You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.”

Seeker: “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it.”

Preacher: Did the psalmist mean and take these words as we mean them now? That I do not know. We know the psalmist was overwhelmed by the Grace and Existence of his God Yahweh. And was in his time worshipful of the Lord God. But the psalmist, as David, also feel short. And was loved in spite of this.

Seeker: “For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” The Lord God knew us and knew of us before we knew of ourselves. We, meaning humanity, create and hope that our creations will be perfect. The Divine creates and knows we will not be perfect, but loves us into existence anyway.

Preacher: “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.”

Seeker: “Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed.”
It is tempting to think that if the Divine knows how and when we will fail, that we should not try anyway. But, we are also given gifts, blessings, and potentials to exceed the expectations of those around us. The Divine’s intimate knowledge us does not confine us but liberates us to be free to try all the possibilities that the faith life affords. With the Divine loving and cheering us all the way, we can break free and truly live!

Preacher: “How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! I try to count them — they are more than the sand; I come to the end — I am still with you.” (
Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18) The Lord God will always be with us; knowing the worst that we might be, we given every opportunity to be the best we can be! Shalom & Selah!
